Casual Parka

First and foremost: I will be doing a tutorial on my faux fringe one of these days, as some people have been asking about it :) I might even do a vlog ozkgzmeghzilzzomg! Expect lots of awkwardness and my deliciously sexy Dutch accent speaking English.

Second: I was riding the bus this morning to go to class, and it just dawned on me how incredibly happy I am at this point in life. The increased recognition I'm getting for my blog makes me feel so content. I'm getting to that point in life where I finally understand and feel that following a certain professional route, proving my worth in the work I put out (both in university and through my blog) and generally expressing myself, honing and using my skills WILL satisfy me and make me happy. Before, I never got that kind of satisfaction in the more professional parts of my life, leading me to conclude I just wasn't a very ambitious person. Maybe I am in fact ambitious. I'm proud of who I am and what I do. My mind has been bubbling with ideas, inspiration and dreams I wish to push into reality one day. And I feel like I will in fact get there someday.

I might just be on the way to accomplishment.

Thirdly: I did not wear yesterday's bustiertop to class! :D I wore it to sit in our garden, soaking up the sun. I would wear it on a trip to the park or to the beach, and last year I wore it to go shopping once on a very hot day. But I would feel a bit bare if I wore it to class or to work. Not that I find it too slutty or that I would disapprove of it on another girl. It's just that I would constantly be fidgeting to see if my boobs were in the right place, and feel way too selfconscious. I'd wear it with a cardigan though!

Fourthly (does this even exist?): I just got my first "hate" comment today! I don't really know how to take it. I mean, the comment was fairly politely worded, but the things that were said were pretty mean. The commenter basically told me I fail at fashion and should find my own style instead of being a slave to fashion that succumbs to cheap knockoffs that look like crap. And also, according to her I look like a teenager that's still grasping for individuality. She did recommend me on my ballsiness, and the fact that I dare to experiment! And that I might become a stylish woman one day, even if I am not there yet. It didn't hurt me, but it did rattle me a bit. I have a hard time imagining other people's motives when they are very different from mine: maybe the girl in question just doesn't really know about netiquette and didn't intend it to come across as an insult. Or maybe she just thought I looked a damn fool. I can respect that, fashion is very subjective and my outfits can get pretty out there. But it seems weird to me that you would see yourself as an authority on style, entitled to tell other people what they should and should not wear? Eh, whatever floats her boat.

blouse, parka: H&M
jeggings: Pimkie
bag: Zara
sandals: Sac d'Anvers
watch: ASOS
ring: Alex Monroe
nailpolish: Model's Own @ River Island

Everything I'm wearing is supercheap by the way. Except for my ring. I'm sorry, angry commenter, I'm not rich. Please forgive me!

EDIT: just got back after a night out with a friend, and it's wayyyy too late to do a post, so you'll have to wait a day longer, sorry! Also, I got another anon comment, this time about me dedicating half a post to the hater thingy and I don't know whether the commenter will read my reply, so I'm copy-pasting it here:

@ anonymous: I did in fact think twice before writing a post about it. On one hand because I had posted about this before in a way that wouldn't be consistent with the way I was about to post about it now, and on the other hand because "internettrolls" only want you to pay attention to them, which makes it kinda dumb to give into it.

However, I chose to continue with my post because I am honest and real, and because priorities and attitudes may change when you ARE confronted by something. Before, I didn't really know what it was like to get one, which obviously influenced the way I thought about the issue.
Also, I do feel like the way I addressed it was different from the way I had seen it being addressed on other blogs. Not as "ooh I'm so sad and the commenter is evil". I actually really stand by the part where I say that maybe I misinterpreted her, or that maybe we just have different tastes, which is OK. I wasn't being sarcastic, I put things in perspective. I get where you're coming from, because I thought about it myself, but I do think you're sort of overreacting. I didn't dedicate half a post to it (it was CLEARLY slightly less than half a post :D), and I didn't do all the things I dislike in other bloggers that talk about the issue. So my opinion changed a bit, but not so much as to render me a total hypocrite, just a normal girl with a fickle mind :)

I did think it was about cheap fashion btw and it was the part about the cheapness of my clothes that annoyed me the most, so that's the part I focused on.

  1. Haters are a pain in the bum, I never understand why people do it. If you don't have something nice to say then go to some hate blog to vent, personal remarks however "polite" they may be are totally out of line. That said, your attitude about this comment is awesome. Keep being fab and looking fab, it's very inspiring to all us other budget fashionistas out here!

You're doing pretty fine if you ask me !

  9. It's great to hear you are happy with the direction your life is taking! Continue to be inspired and pursue your dreams!

Those jeans look great on you and your make up is so pretty! My favorite daily look, black liner and rosy lips! :D

Uh, whether she said it politely or not that is so rude to say! Constructive criticism would be something like "you look great although I would have probably gone with a different shoe" or "great dress, I think it would look even better belted". If occasionally I'm not digging a blogger's particular outfit, then I keep to myself. If I don't like their style at all, then no point in looking at the blog or commenting. She must be a pretty pathetic person who has nothing better to do than try to put others down to make herself feel better. I'm glad you're not allowing it to get to you, you are definitely a beautiful and stylish woman!

  15. There are people in the world who take pure enjoyment in trying to embarrass others. It's basically in their interest to put people down and just be rude. They're called internet trolls. They troll the internet looking for ways for people to react. They're pretty much morons.

Anyways, you look wonderful!! You're smart, your blog is super cute, and you always look like a bucket of sunshine:) Stay beautiful sweetie!

  16. eh, as you say, you're getting more readers & it's obviously for a reason- you have adorable style and awesome content! So you can just take getting your first hate comment as a good sign! I don't understand either why people don't just keep rude comments like that to themselves or just not look at blog. keep on rocking on a budget.
that's great you're feeling so great and motivated about things. I had been feeling really unmotivated about everything for the past few months until I started blogging and putting my energy into something I really care about.

  22. My dear, with recognition and love comes a lot of jealousy and people who will not like you, because it's just a fact of life.

However, I simply don't get haters, because I live by one rule "Live and let live". I don't give a rat's ass about what others do (as long as they don't hurt me or someone I love of course).

Cheap fashion is that, cheap. But hey, just because you, me and SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE OH MY GOD OH MY GOD STUNNING BREAKING NEWS RIGHT NOW :P don't have the cash to buy expensively overpriced garments that may say "I'm such an amaaaaaaazing human beinggggggg daarrrrlinngggggg" it doesn't deserve anyone's criticism. I think I got strangely inspired today because I wrote something on my site that relates to what you have written here.

Seriously, I just don't get haters. If I don't like a site, a magazine, anything, I just don't read it, and I certainly don't waste my time critisizing it, I move on, spend my time on something I like.

Still in love with your parka...and your hair xxx

Also, blogging really does make me happy and I won't get tired of saying that I love your blog. Sorry to hear about the hater. I know that we put ourselves out there too much but you're damn right, whatever float on everyone's boat. :) (Did it sound right?) LOL!

  28. First, I think this is a very cute look, perfect for a spring stroll in the park or a weekend roadtrip. A parka is one of my spring staples and love the simple way you wear it!
Second, ignore the hater comments, that's the main reason why I had my comments moderated in the first place, after all this is YOUR blog and you practically put your soul for everyone to see and you are in charge. Also don't worry about what people may think about you/your sense of style. If you feel good (as I know you do from your text in this post!) that's all that matters. Just for the record though, I do think you do have a great sense of style!

PS: I'd love to see a vlog from you, I'm such a nosy person regarding bloggers! And I love to add a voice to the face! :)

  29. ugh, now it was me who got an angry comment...Apparently I offended someone A LOT with a silly essay I wrote which I thought was more funny (and, again, silly) than anything else... and yes it doesn't feel good.

Oh well, guess you can't please everyone ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Frankly, I read the comment, and while I understand how you would be offended I think it's ridiculous for you to dedicate half a post to it - especially since you published a different post (a few months ago - been reading for a while) about how getting negative comments is part of blogging and you have to just deal with it.

And that wasn't about cheap fashion, it was about being too trendy. I don't think you're a slave to trends, but I do think you handled that comment poorly.

  38. I think it's interesting to see how people react on these matters. Of course there will always be haters, but I also read the comment that started this discussion and I thought it was only a semi-hater comment. It was more like a typical bad remark, also disguised as a compliment. Like, they want to make you feel bad but then confuse you by saying something good and then you're not sure what they actually want to say anymore and they sort of leave you with this feeling of wanting approval (or at least, they want to create that feeling). I feel as if that person is indeed a bit snobby, trying to act as if she knows it all, then again we all act that way one time or another right? It's just that putting it online in an anonymous way is a bit cowardy... And I don't think it's wrong you outed your feelings about this comment in a blogpost, after all we blog about what we feel/like/love so..

I don't understand why "bloggers" think their comments section needs to be a place to glorify and praise the blogger. Like that is the only acceptable form of comment. Needless to say, I wont be returning to your blog. You should have ignored the comment and moved on. Making it public was the wrong move.

  41. Lol, that's just ridiculous. Do you really think I believe that you JUST found my blog and loved it to bits, but the post you JUST found on my blog was one about haters so you JUST decided you don't love my blog anymore, after reading that first post you initially loved? What did you exactly LOVE about my blog in the first place, then? the lay-out? :D

I probably should have ignored the hate comment, but not for the ridiculous reasons some people bring up. I should have ignored it because giving that stuff attention just makes it florish. Kinda sucks, because I like talking about things honestly and ignoring "tactics". I was hoping to have an open and rational conversation about this with the first anon, but I guess my expectations shouldn't be too high when addressing an anon. Oh well! Living, learning!

    ReplyDelete
  42. btw: I didn't make it public, silly. The internet IS public: publishing a comment already makes your thoughts public :p

    ReplyDelete
  43. I briefly scrolled through the posts (not reading), to get a general feel for your style etc, that is how I can say I loved your blog. I then read the first post. It is not ridiculous, but OK! When addressing an anon? 1. I left my name. 2. I don't like posting my email on any websites and 3. I don't have a blog or google account to leave something like that. Perhaps I should have just kept my thoughts to myself, but your response was so incredibly smart ass.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I thought you wouldn't be returning to my blog? :p I am however glad that you did take the time to respond, because I like to believe that anon commenters aren't just randomly hating on people, they just get annoyed by something and don't want to go through the hassle of being all polite about it. As you can see, I'm just trying to get to the mechanisms behind it, as I hadn't been confronted with this before. Since you did take the time to come back and comment, I hope you will keep on doing so: after all, I don't mind people not agreeing with me, even if it might have come across like that. I might reply in a pissy way, but I actually like that it pushes me to rethink the things I said before instead of jumping to defensive conclusions. I do not think that my comments section should be a freakin suck-up tribute to my awesomeness AT ALL, I think you are jumping to conclusions about my personality based on BS you saw other bloggers post. If you would have read more posts by me, you might have noticed that I am not easily hurt/pissed/sad/whatever. I am a very happy person and I can totally put things in perspective. I just have quite a confrontational nature, as in I like to grab the bull by its horns instead of tiptoeing (is that even right?) around a certain issue. If you keep quiet about things that annoy you, you'll never learn more about yourself and the world. So my biggest priority here was to open the discussion and show that I had missjudged the impact getting a hate comment can have on a person. Maybe you are in the same place I was at a few months back, thinking that bloggers nagging about the issue were just insecure little bitches that needed constant approval. I still feel that way about certain people (haha), but I do think about things with a bit more nuance now. I may have worded things crappy out of laziness, but that was the point I was trying to get across. And I did feel like I was being nice and humble about the subject, except maybe that last part about my ring and cheap stuff, but that was just a little joke!

do you get my point better now, or am I just pissing you off more? :D again: this isn't about getting affirmation from people I don't even know, this is about trying to get to the bottom of both the whole hate comment thing and my own feelings.

ps: don't know if it was clear to you, but I didn't consider that anon comment a hate comment, and I didn't call it a hate comment either. I don't know if you read the actual hate comment I posted about (it's in dutch, on my previous post), but that's the one I was referring too.

  49. I don't think I could ever leave a really negative comment on a fashion blogger's posts. Of course I don't always love the outfits I see, and sometimes I think they're downright weird and unflattering. But my comments are always positive - I always find something positive to say! I know some of my own outfits are pretty nutty sometimes and I'm certain a lot of folks think I look odd, but my outfits make me happy. So I just assume that all these other funny-to-me outfits make THEM happy and that's what counts.

AND. The cheaper the outfit the better! I'm so much more proud to be able to say I thrifted a whole outfit, than I would be saying my entire outfit is made of expensive designer labels. Saving money is trendy!

  50. I'm catching up on some blog backlog, but just wanted to jump in and say this conversation is hilarious. Well done on being spunky, well done on not being a whiny insecure blogger (and I imagine we're thinking about the same people, ahem, person, maybe). And well done to Kelley too for voicing an opinion I guess. Bloggers can be irritating people, but I definitely don't put you in that category, Annebeth. I always like having a debate with you. ; )
