Hi babes! High time I did another blog post. I received a box containing eight of the ten new colours in the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink City Edition range, and since the Maybelline Superstay Mattes are hands down my favourite drugstore liquid lipsticks, I had to do a review for you guys.
- Do you like a matte liquid lipstick that stays put, even if you're having greasy food?
- Do you want your matte liquid lipstick to not feel powdery and dry but slightly hydrating?
- Do you enjoy a great pointed doefoot applicator which allows you to creat neat edges without having to use a liner or a lip brush?
- Do you look for a good range of exactly those traditional but bright shades that complete basically every makeup collection?
You know you do. And the Maybelline Superstay Matte Inks tick all of those boxes for me. I have to say the Kat von D Everlasting liquids are still my all time favs because of the shade range and because of how light and comfortable they feel on the lips, but they are on the more expensive side of the spectrum, and they are not long lasting at all. They fade, but they don't smudge, so I can deal with it. But the Superstay Matte Inks totally outperform the Kat von D liquids in lasting power.
Let me show you the different shades.
The first one is 125 Inspirer, a muted, neutral pale pink that is about as wearable as this sweet as candy colour is ever gonna get. Not my go-to colour but great quality, opaque in one layer.
The second is 15 Lover, which is the type of mauve-y pink I love to wear so much on a day to day basis. This type of mauve is the type of cool toned lip colour I reach for most, and it's very similar to Urban Decay's Backtalk.
This is 120 Artist and I definitely did not expect to love this one as much as I do. The lipstick photographs brighter than it is in real life, in reality it is less pink and more of a very saturated raspberry shade. I don't generally go for these plummy/purple pinks, but this shade is just perfect in every way and very, very flattering.
50 Voyager is a cool toned wine red, and it is my least favourite out of the bunch. I feel like the colour could have been more saturated, like Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Grand Cru which is still my all time favourite red, but alas.
117 Ground-Breaker is a coup-de-foudre for me though. I have a major weakness for orange based reds, and this one is just deep enough to function as a dupe for Kylie Cosmetics' 22 lip kit. Bright, flattering, fresh and takes me straight to summer. I can't wait to wear this colour with a tan while cruising through Puglia come July.
This is 118 Dancer - a very classic, neutral red. Not the most exciting shade but still beautiful and perfect for that retro pin up look.
25 Heroine is the least high quality out of the bunch, because you have to apply two layers to get the colour perfectly even. It's still a lovely shade though, albeit hard to photograph. It's a neon watermelon/coral shade, somewhere between pink, orange and red. It works best if you apply it a bit more thinly than the other shades, and then dab off any excess to even off pigmentation across the lips.
130 Self Starter: I saved the best for last. I have been looking for the perfect warm toned, peachy my-lips-but-better shade for aaaaages, but the ones I've found were generally either too light or too red/pink. Self Starter is absolutely perfect, the type of neutral shade like my other favourites (Kat von D's Lolita and Double Dare + Urban Decay's Backtalk), but the colour fills a gap in my beauty collection. Do you have any idea how rarely that happens if you're a beauty junkie like me?? So yeah, a very unique, perfect shade that I would recommend to anyone looking for an everyday lip colour that brightens up your face and goes with everything.
And truly, the performance of these is amazing. If I don't go to town with oil and some scrubbing, these lipsticks will be on your lips until the next day, not even kidding. See below for a pic taken about 5 hours after application of Ground-Breaker, after having a meal of soup + grilled cheese sandwich. As you can see, the lipstick is basically still flawless. And they don't dry your lips one bit.
The Maybelline Superstay Matte Inks are available for about 8-9€: a total steal if you ask me. A 10/10 in my book of beauty reviews!
Let me know if you have any questions ;-)
