SWATCHALOOKINGAT

When I was a kid I used to wear a succession of Swatch watches, my fave being a sheer piece with blue bands and a yellow clock. If you turned it over you could see the wheels turning the time, second by second. I friggin loved that watch and had it on my right arm (seemed logical to me as a kid, even though I'm right handed) until the face of the clock was scratched to oblivion.

My best friend at the time had the same watch, but with a blue clock and yellow bands. When I think of that watch, I remember looking down on it to check the time while we were riding our bikes during the summertime. We always pedalled all the way to a neighbouring town across the freeway for our weekly scouting meetings, Sundays from 2 until 5. Apart from learning to tie different sorts of knots, I made a blowpipe and used it to shoot chewed wads of paper to boys I secretly liked. I guess I didn't have much game, though I do recall the boy I liked most (a soft-spoken, freckled redhead called Kevin) telling me he thought my new haircut was pretty on one occasion. He probably liked me too.

My brother, babysis and me and the haircut Kevin complimented me on. Not wearing the Swatch, but it was swimming pool time! My sis still struggles with putting on bathingsuits.

Anyway, I won a contest hosted by UPR a while ago and got to pick two Swatch watches to my liking. I love Swatch. I mean, I wouldn't mind me some Cartier Watches style bling either, but my heart lies with Swatch for being modest, affordable and quirky. Sort of like me! Minus the modest and affordable part.

I wasn't a 100% sure of the new Gent Lacquered collection, because the clock is quite big (I have ridiculously thin wrists) and because I thought the exposed wheels might be a bit too childish or "sportsy" to go with my style. I'm not exactly the athletic type, unless you count brushing my hair as excercise. And most days I'm too lazy for that too.

I was wrong. I've been wearing my pink watch for 5 days straight now, and I love it. A lot. The feeling of the straps around my wrist makes me strangely happy, and the pink is like Mary Poppins: practically perfect in every way.

Yeah, I wear my watch on my left wrist. I'm a grown up now.

  13. It's so pretty and wonderfully pink! Sometimes I think I should pick out a watch to wear and be a grown up. I would have no problem at all wearing such a fun one.

  14. See, that watch would confuse me. No numbers! It's blank and blank o'clock? Heehee. I only have the memory of one watch as a kid, it had a pink band with a pink heart background and it had a little button to make the screen come a-glow at night. I'm so used to having a watch on that I feel naked without it.
