Fairisle and Schoolskirt and hazing.

Ah, my last set of pictures with my natural haircolor. THE END OF AN ERA. Until my green hair fades, that is. It's interesting to see how I leaned more towards rusty or 'natural', warm shades when my hair was still brown while I go for cooler, 'harder' hues right now with my green hair. Also, if I look tired, it's because I am. Apparently, your master's year at Uni is really demanding? Who'da thunk it?

:(

My sweater is the bomb, I bought it for 3 euro. Anything fairisle is a win in my book.

By the way: the Belgian government is proposing to form a law to prohibit hazing (ontgroening) at schools etcetera. I'm totally for it. Hazing is a horrible form of social pressure that often results in public humiliation at the least and physical and psychological damage at the worst. We have evolved past having to be put down by groups to fit in, at least I hope so. My opinion isn't exactly popular at uni with regards to this, but I stand by it. After reading about the amount of sexual degradation or even rape, gay-bashing and woman-hating going on during hazings, my views only solidified.

What are your opinions on hazing?

PS my mom got me this and I love it

I know what you mean.

  4. Hazing is stupid... but then again you've gotta be kind of dumb to agree to it in the first place.

LOVE the outfit... and I may be naive (or just living with a mad independentist)... but I thought Belgium hadn't had a government for 2 years or something?!

  5. we have a government since um yesterday or sth and we still have a government that runs the day to day shiz! :D

  7. Officially behind on my news... would be interested to hear your view on all of that actually (the independentist has just finished droning my ear off). : D

  8. welllll I actually not so secretly really hate politics and political news and anything to do with economy as it depresses me because it seems as if no one still has any ideals left in that field, so I don't like talking about it :(

As you should be.

  11. Hazing is terrible, I absolutely agree, it's basically assault a lot of the time! Degrading others is never okay.
BUT, on a lighter note your sweater is absolutely gorgeous and what a steal of a deal :) It looks really great with that skirt too

  12. It's good that the government is stepping in and creating this law-- I don't think there's a law in the U.S.; individual colleges officially prohibit hazing but it goes on anyways.

On a lighter note, I love your sweater and of course plaid is always an excellent choice in autumn/winter. :)

  13. LOVE your sweater! And I love that house your mom got you :)

  14. Hazing is already banned at universities in the U.S. I believe. We all sign no-hazing papers when we get involved with any organization.
Also, I love that sweater! What a bargain!

  16. Oh I love the pattern mixing here. I am never very good at pattern mixing, and perhaps I need to experiment a bit more. The plaid and sweater works so well together!

Lovely outfit, I really like how you combined the two different patterns.

  20. I'm not exactly pro-hazing, but to forbid seems a little stupid. (I don't think it will happen either, it's just one representative, and an independent one at that, so he doesn't have a political party to back him up. Besides, he's federal, and education regulation is the prerogative of the communities.) Hazing is pretty regulated in Flanders, and I don't know about other cities, but in Ghent every hazing is supervised by someone not related to the student society. Swimming in animal organs or getting peed on really doesn't happen anymore. Just a bunch of silly first years having to sing stupid songs in the street smelling of eggs and garlic; or asking people to sign idiotic petitions. While I don't see the immediate use of it, I don't exactly think it's a pressing problem either. Just a politician who wanted some media coverage.

  21. I have heard about ridiculous alcohol consumption and I'm like 100% sure that not everything that happens is at all times supervised. And I think in some cases social pressure does A LOT, loads of people in PSW at the UA got hazed and the things I saw were pretty harsh at times, like having to run around in your underwear during wintertime.

  22. Great buy, I must say. We recently had the discussion on student hazing at our uni and I agree with you. Unlike you, I wasn't the only one with this opinion. The stories I've heard made me think that if this experience is a traumatic one for just one student, maybe the whole thing is not worth it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sure, but students really don't need hazing rituals to drink - I knew plenty of people at my uni without any connections to student societies who had the habit of drinking extraordinary amounts of alcohol. I can't say for sure how intense supervision is, and maybe some sordid things still go on. But a prohibition will only ensure that hazings will go 'underground', and then no supervision at all will be possible.

    ReplyDelete
  24. that's like saying people die without them getting murdered as well, so murders aren't that bad :p social pressure -> drinking is always one extra person drinking too much while he/she really wouldn't have done so without the pressure. I think it's glaringly obvious that that is wrong. The argument about things going underground doesn't actually fly for every situation, and I don't think it flies here. Hazing has changed through history, which means it doesn't HAVE to exist in the same form for ever and ever which would necessitate regulation.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Again, I'm not pro-hazing, far from it. I think hazing procedures range from silly to gross to downright disgusting power play. But social pressure exists outside of student societies as well, doesn't it? I'm not saying that makes it okay, I'm saying you won't solve the problem by suppressing this one factor. As for going underground, I think the article you quote contradicts you - it states that "80 percent of college athletes had been hazed" even though "hazing is against the policy of most colleges, and anti-hazing statutes exist in 38 states". Only half - which is still a lot, of course - of those hazings included the consumption of alcohol: http://www.alfred.edu/sports_hazing/howmanystudents.cfm

So yes, hazing doesn't have to be awulf and yes, regulation is necessary. But I think that regulation should take the form of rules and sensibilisation, instead of just a ban.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't have a clear opinion on the topic of whether this MUST be banned or just very strictly regulated (I was just replying to some claims you made I didn't agree with), but I do think something absolutely should be done, and not in some half assed approach. We probably don't differ in opinion that much :)

And I'm not a fan of hazing either. I'm so glad they don't do it at my school.

  30. oh, you school girl, you! sometimes I wish I were in school now, so that I could wear pleated skirts like this one and lace up booties and all that!

  31. tell us your story! what happened, why did you like it? I read a psychological theory once about people who endured hardship and the fact that they make it better in their memory to compensate for the trauma :D

  32. Eeeee! I love this! It's like a plaid print party up in there! I think this would still look amazing with your green hair, too.

  34. In my (old) high school we have a "tradition" of hazing, and it's literally quite disgusting, as it's basically a food fight, except that the first year students aren't allowed to fight back... so you get the old milk and dog food and such, and then the students are made to walk around the town in their smelly state (paired with some embarrassing clothing theme, covered in something that looks like vomit) chanting how they come from our "rival" school. Sounds lovely, doesn't it? However, everyone is free to join it or not join it, without any consequences. And to prove the theory you mentioned earlier, my school has a very low school bullying rate. We are/were (now that I've graduated, I can't really speak in the present form anymore) a very tight pack, and even those who didn't join the hazing (such as me) are/were included in the group. Sure things can go terribly wrong, and they do go, but hazing can in some cases be a positive thing, as it creates school spirit. Banning it by law wouldn't really work either, students will just find ways around it.

  35. Great outfit! And awesome sweater. I agree that hazing needs to end and I can't understand why anybody would oppose its end. It's degrading and wrong.
