Circus Pipo

Hey guys, I hope your Saturday was ace! Like I told y'all yesterday I went to the circus and I absolutely loved it. Yes, I got a sore ass from sitting on those hard wooden benches for two and a half hours. Also, the acts were pretty lame most of the time, and about 80% of all acts had bits that failed because the animals wouldn't cooperate or because the performers were shite. But none of it mattered: the circus has an air of magic, of an adventurous lifestyle mixed with the despair of changing times and financial struggles. I felt like like I was donating to a good cause by visiting the circus since these people keep a cultural tradition alive with every performance even though the life they chose isn't easy at all.

Circus Pipo (sadly I really hate the name, circuses should be named after the family running it: Circus Rimbaldi for example!) is a family business: the eleven year old daughter sells the tickets but is also starting out as a performer with hoola hoops, the ringmaster sells popcorn and cotton candy before the circus starts and most performers had several characters and acts during the course of the evening. It's a tough life, living in trailers and giving several performances per day, moving from town to town every week... So yeah, go to the circus, people: support these performers and have fun while doing it!

And I'll take you on a small photo-tour through my evening at the circus :-) First up: arrival and cotton candy!

Actually I don't even like cotton candy that much, tastewise at least, but it smells and looks SO COOL

Next up: we entered the venue and were ushered to our seats on the bleachers by one of the performers, Cheyenne, who spoke perfect Dutch even though the ringmaster told us she was Italian. Ah, the razzle dazzle of showbiz! <3

Just before the show was the perfect time for some outfit pictures. I wanted to dress for the circus theme and went with lace up ankle boots because they give that old time costumey vibe, fishnets for the sexy sexy, bright orange-blue stripes to evoke the typical red-blue circus stripes, a cable knit and military-style coat for warmth et voila, my circus outfit!

I also had popcorn.

And then the show started. Keep an eye open for the hot booty on the juggler (he was adorbs), the hoola hoop girl looking like Little Miss Sunshine's Abi Breslin, Cheyenne doing tricks high up in the ropes, bulls, llama's and donkeys, a sitting pony and a pirate doing magician tricks.

Totally Little Miss Sunshine, right? She basically dropped all the hoola hoops but she was just eleven years old and adorable and it just made the whole show that much more lame/awesome, all at the same time <3

After the show, night had fallen and the lights around the tent gave our night even more enchantment. A great evening! Especially since we got home and enjoyed a big bowl of hot, spicy spaghetti bolognese.

  7. I totally had to force myself to read this post since circuses scare the sh*t out of me. Maybe its the costumes..not sure. Actually it was probably the clowns. Anyways, I'm glad there were no clowns in the pictures, so that was a relief!! And it looked like you had a fun time!!

And that hulu hoop girl is totally Little Miss Sunshine!! Ahh..such a great movie:)

  8. I so want to go to a circus! Even if it is 80% lame, it's still fun. Hehe. I have a weakness for doing things that are cheesy-- when my friends and I went to the fair a few weeks ago, we went through the pirate haunted house, even though one of my friends insisted it was really stupid. And we decided to scream like we were terrified, and it was a blast.
So yes. Lame things can be really fun.
Also, I love that you match the tent and the popcorn with your dress! You are so pretty!

  9. love this post and your outfit! my favorite one is the pic with the cotton candy stick! you look a little bit like a french cancan girl and i mean this in the nicest way! it is probably because of the boots! the dress looks insane because of the colors and the shape

  10. I just love the outfit you wore to the circus! The colors are fantastic and your boots are super cool. Looks like you had such a fun time. I can't even remember the last time I went to a circus

  11. A perfect dress for the circus! I love the combo of the magic and the decay. No more exotic animals, for all good reasons, replaced by farm animals, funny :D . And the mediocre acts, seamed really slapstick! I'll have to visit a circus again to, thanks for reminding me why ;)

  16. Looks fun! Love the picture with the lights, and you under the lights too! I think things like Hollywood movies kind of ruin the circus, because in the movies all the animals are amazing and the people beautiful and so on. But definitely still worth going in real life! Mind you, I saw some clowns in Barcelona a few weeks ago and they were definitely the most disturbing things I'd seen in ages! Made me realize that clown humour is probably hundreds of years old and that maybe humankind has developed a bit since then ; D

  17. absolutely, not just because of our expectations but mostly because everything on tv and in movies is so perfect and glitsy. I found the imperfections and realness of the circus refreshing and endearing. But clowns will always be scary :-D luckily ours had the hot juggler put on a chaplin esque pose and fill in the clown part!
