Plaid and Petticoat

I wore this outfit to go get my passport renewed (FINALLY!), so when anyone offers me an unexpected trip abroad, NOW I am prepared! It was about time I'd fix my illegal alien status yo. Don't mind the iffy lighting in these pics, don't know what happened!

I should have gone without the petticoat because it was gross, hot and humid outside and let me tell you, petticoats are WARM. But I just love how it looks with my dress so I let style beat comfort today. All those girls who wear heels everyday/sleep with hairrollers/get up an hour early for hair and make up probably think I'm bonkers for nagging about being slightly hot with the petticoat, but I guess that's just my aesthetic: I prefer outfits that look real rather than perfect.

When on tumblr, I never reblog those TOO perfect photoshoot-esque shots where it stops looking like a girl expressing her individuality in an outfit and ends up being an obvious shot of a model modelling some stuff, very uninspiring and way too clean. Practicality grounds an outfit if you ask me, which is basically the best tip I can give anyone on wearing vintage/vintage inspired garments. Take a leap into 2011 by pairing a full skirted Betty Draper dress with sensible flats (preferably quirky ones to add some humor) and messy, natural hair!

If you need inspiration: just follow the links in my blogroll, basically all the ladies in there have this shit down :-) Some examples!

the hummingbird girls and a fine day for sailing for the flats + simple, classic jersey tops: perfect way to make high waisted and midi skirts more wearable
aha shake heartbreaker for the slouchy cardi and lived in flats

The Flower Girl for the comfy boots, fresh face sans make up and bed hair

Calivintage for the quirky platforms and the practical purse!

Crimson Rosella for the simple flats with the flirty dress and perfect beehive (wannatry!)

Love yours truly because she is my fave blogger atm and because she managed to rock a turban in the most subtle yet stunning way I have ever seen: simple flattering dress, simple flats and you hardly notice how "weird" or "retro" a turban really is!

You get the picture, right? :-)

dress: River Island
belt: Pimkie
sandals: H&M
box bag: Zara
petticoat: Etsy, Flossy's Treasures

Almost forgot! Foodporn today: a yummy burger with an icy cold coke

  1. you are hilarious and sometimes a little bit fashion insane, but insane in a very good way! love the combination with the petticoat, adds something extra, something interesting.

I was in a competition but i withdraw because of the bloggers i had to compete with were too perfect indeed! it is not only about the fashion anymore it is about photoshop! and it drives me crazy! i have a smashing camera but still, there is no way you can create photos like that without PS. all the most famous blogs have insane photos and insane assistants! so you are right!!

  2. LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!! :D :D I love the lighting actually :D
And I agree, I [refer practically/comfort over looking perfect. But oddly enough I'm more comfortable in heels than flats XDXD But I'm usually pretty simple with my outfits as you know ;) Not really all that fussy
and I agree, highly photoshopped pics are sooo uninspiring! I prefer more real stuff too. (though I do love magazine photoshoots ;) )

  3. Yeah, it drives me nuts when every thing's perfect all the time. Probably why I also don't read many blogs by stunningly gorgeous (movie star pretty) girls. I like things relatable. Erm, Also, pretentious teenager blogs kind of annoy me but ahem, I'll leave that comment be. ; D

  5. Leuke outfit! En nu heb je een excuus om op reis te gaan hé, met je nieuw paspoot ;)

Mooie inspiratiefoto's, Yours Truly is ook één van mijn favoriete blogs.

  6. The first photo of you is perfection, your petticoat looks built for twirling! I definitely try to keep my vintage outfits 'real' and 'wearable', especially in the summer. I tend to wear leather jazz shoes or espadrilles with most of my little vintage sundresses. Also I pretty much give up on petticoats when it gets too hot.

  9. This petticoat is amazing under that dress!! It adds such amazing fullness. Definitely need to invest in one of those, and if it's warm it'll be good for winter :)
I love when girls look more real, if everythings too perfect I can't relate and find it discouraging

  12. I definitely agree with you, I like outfits that you can tell are personal and not too styled - things you'd actually wear and not just take a few photos in!
    Yay passport!!

  15. I agree! The more "real" a fashion blog is, the more I love it. And Yours Truly is my current style crush, too! I adore her.
And I LOVE the petticoat. I do the same thing sometimes; fashion over comfort. And then I always wonder why I did that by the end of the day.

  16. Your 'weird' lighting looks like lens flare to me - basically the sun is really bright and is shining into your lens at an angle. It's usually a feature of SLR photography because the lenses have so many components. Funnily enough, lens flare is often the most sought after effect by the pretentious fashion blogger, precisely for its mystical lighting effect! Hehe :).

  22. Maybe it made you warm but that petticoat looks fantastic with this dress. Kinda tempts me to get one too, but I don't have as many pieces with which I could wear one.

  26. You shared tons of great pictures today! I agree with you. As pretty as the fancy photo shoots are, I enjoy seeing people in their real outfits so I can get some inspiration for my everyday outfits. I always love when you wear that dress and it looks wonderful with the petticoat underneath. Sorry it was so hot!
