Advertorial: Preppy My Way

You might've noticed the ad at the bottom of my blog by now. Tommy Hilfiger contacted me to do a post about a contest they're hosting and because it's such a fun contest, I thought I might as well host the banner for a few days to let all of you know about it! You can win a trip to a must-visit city of your choice and all you have to do is upload a picture of you in your favorite preppy attire. I'm definitely going to compete, and so should you because I know my fab readers are all stylish as hell so go ahead and take a shot!

Now, let's get to the bottom of this preppy business. Prep comes from prep school or preparation school, the place where uptown boys and girls are sent to prepare for their expensive college of choice. A style of dress exclusively associated with smart dressed, well to do youngsters, class, crispness and a bit of an attitude.

I love me a bit of prep, especially the tongue in cheek retro version where you go intentionally preppy, a bit like my sugary sweet look from a few days ago. I might just upload that one to the competition. I encourage all of you to be preppy in your very OWN way, but if you want my advice, here are MY key prep pieces: scarves, shirts, collars, sweaters, chinos, stripes, plaid, argyle, pastels, cardigans, natural make up, ponytails and flats (preferably loafers or boat shoes)! Think casual, but still put together and slightly dressed up, like wearing pearl studs with a polo shirt.

Today's outfit isn't really preppy but it still contains some elements: the nautical wedges (nautical is preppy!), the stripes and the denim jacket. Denim jackets used to be worker wear, but they've become the number one casual wear for the upper classes and, ironically, a way of showing off your financial status. The tiniest miniskirts cost an arm and a leg, but at least you'll be able to show off the other leg! :-D

I like the casual cool denim exudes but I dislike how uncomfortable it is. All those women going on about how denim pants > skirts and dresses because you can move around more easily are basically insane. I can't even sit down comfortably in denim pants, let alone move around vigorously! But I'd gladly sacrifice a bit of comfort from time to time if it adds to an outfit, I'm vain like that.

ANYWAY, the competition is international so all of you should compete: upload that look, lovelies! Dutch here, English here. Good luck!!

jacket: H&M
skirt: T2 vintage

Jeez Louise my hair is getting so long! Exciting!

  2. What a great competition! I would like to get my butt in gear an enter, but I don't think I'm very good at preppy? Not sure, I might give it a go! Loving this outfit by the way, that skirt looks wonderful styled like this!

  3. This is such a lovely look, I love your wedges!
Hmm...I disagree about denim: it really is comfortable to me! There was a time, maybe last year, when I wore just denim pants to go the university, all the time. :) well, I guess it depends on the person.

  7. Such a lovely outfit! I like the wedges, and the clock necklace is ADORABLE.

I actually find jeans to be really comfortable, as long as they fit well. Heck, I've slept in my jeans before and felt fine. Dresses and skirts do offer more movement in some ways, but I also find they are restricting when it comes to certain things.. like I really hate trying to bike in skirts, and I bike a lot, so they're a bit less practical for me.

  9. Yeah, I don't find denim very comfortable. I find jeans could for when you don't want to feel too crumpled, or have your period and are miserable or whatever, but denim skirts are just annoying, and denim jackets aren't even warm. Also, can't disagree enough with the commenter who says skirts are uncomfortable to bike in... skirts are awesome to bike in!

Anyway, that's all a tangent. You look lovely, and I might have to have a think about this contest. I feel like I'm really rubbish at preppy, though appreciate when people can do it well with a twist (like Lulu Letty). I agree that your stripes and jacket and shoes are preppy... the skirt though? It's awesome anyway. ; D

  13. Congrats on the sponsorship! This sounds like a fun contest, and I like your take on preppy style! Red, white and blue always look so good together. I don't think I've seen you wear that necklace before, either -- it's really cool!

  14. Congrats on the sponsorship, thats so cool! I really like the preppy/nautical look. I love this bright red skirt, so gorgeous and it looks great with the denim jacket. I seem to be living in mine lately. I find pants of any kind pretty uncomfortable, my legs were meant to be freee!
