Blogger Bitching

Holla! Have you been windowshopping at ASOS? That crazy contest ends tomorrow at noon PEOPLE! Get shopping!
I bought this dress a few months ago for 1 euro at my favorite vintage shop (T2, haha I mention this shop way too often). It had weird stains in the front of the skirt, but I figured for 1 euro I could at least take the gamble to try and dryclean or dye it in order to salvage it, because I really loved the classic silhouette. None of that was necessary though, with a simple bit of handwashing all the stains came out perfectly! This pretty frock would never have been left hanging in the shop long enough for it to be marked down to 1 euro if it hadn't been stained, so I'm thanking the staingods for assisting me. I'm still thinking of dyeing it because, even though I love the color, it doesn't really suit me much. Makes me look sort of pail and sickly, no? What color should I dye this? Should I dye this at all?

Anyway, I hadn't gotten around to wearing it yet because it has been hellacold, and this dress SCREAMS summer to me, but yesterday I suddenly envisioned it with a leather jacket. As you can see, I ended up wearing it with a knit cardigan instead of a leather jacket, but my point still stands!

The necklace is a new H&M buy. I don't understand how anyone could ever dislike H&M. H&M provides us with the opportunity to buy AWESOME,  on trend stuff for low prices. These kind of birdclaw necklaces used to be all the rage like a year or something ago on the blogosphere, but I wasn't about to shell out at least 50 bucks for one of these to be delivered to my doorstep. A few days ago I walk into H&M and there these were, for only 4.50 euro! It actually comes as a silver birdclaw clasping a gold ball, but I removed the gold ball because I like it better this way. I'm supercreative like that.

Like probably every other blogger in the world, I stumbled upon Sofia's piece on the negative sides of blogging. What do you guys think? I'm not a huge fan of all the bitching and moaning going on on lots of other blogs. People nag that they don't get popular like some people do, they nag that they get negative comments, they nag that they aren't able to keep up with certain bloggers that buy/have everything, they nag that the internet promotes certain beauty-standards over others, and so on and so forth. My opinion on the matter is: DUDES, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. You're not entitled to becoming famous just because you post your shit on the web, you aren't untouchable, and whenever some whiny kid wants to bitch about you, it isn't really going to hurt you. It doesn't really mean anything unless you contribute meaning to it. It isn't necessary to have lots of money if you want to run a cool blog. You can't buy an eye for style, and there are LOTS of cheap ways to practice fashion if you are inventive enough. You don't have to look like a model to have a good blog, you just have to provide good content.
If you have been feeling down due to things Sofia mentioned, ask yourself this: who are you blogging for? Yourself or AN AUDIENCE? I have noticed the same thing on chictopia: nagging on the forums because this one young girl had the AUDACITY to tell someone they didn't really like the other person's outfit. Come on. Ignore/delete: problem solved! You can nag when you have like, medical issues or something. DUDE
If you don't blog because you love to blog: stop doing it. Your content will suck anyway if you don't enjoy blogging. And if you really want an audience to share your blog with: pimp the hell out of it by visiting other blogs and spreading the word (but not in that "follow me i follow u" crap way ok). Make friends, and the followers will, well, follow.

Peace out.

PS: none of this is meant to "call out" Sofia, I like her honesty and her remarks are quite right. It isn't about those "problems", it's about how you deal with it. How you deal with LIFE. I have been noticing SO many nagging bloggers lately and I just wanted to address that fact. Get a bit of perspective, people. Having someone call you fat or something online is not the end of the world.

dress: T2
cardigan: Zara
tights: Pimkie
boots, collar,necklace: H&M
belt: boyfriend
stern look: from me to the naggers
smile: because I'm not really a hard ass. Figuratively of course, I do actually have quite a hard ass.

  1. This is such an elegant outfit, I love the colour of the dress and the fur collars adds such glamour.

  2. This is my favorite post from you as of yet. I have not read the blog post from Sofia but thanks for linking.

First, I love the dress the way it is. It's already perfect. I love visiting your blog because of the sensible content and the pictures. Great source of inspiration. :)

Second, almost everyone's blogging and yes almost everyone wants to be the next big thing or what-not. Other people are really too jealous and plainly superficial. They also have the audacity to ask you to follow them or vote for them in some contest. There will always be haters but those are only words from some random stranger that you don't even know or met. It should not ruin anyone's day. Not worth anyone's time.

I love blogging for myself. It's nice to have people come and visit your site and at the end of the day, it's just words. You can't let a random stranger affect you.

  4. DUDE. I love that you say DUDE. Liking your new hair with this ensemble. I wouldn't fault Sofia for bringing light to this issue. I've read other bloggers address it before and there is some truth. Luckily I don't get many negative comments but it's hard to completely ignore them at first. But then I remember that it's my freakin blog & you can't appeal to everyone. Most naysayers aren't regular readers anyway.

  7. personally, I think that shade of aqua looks good on everyone and I like it with the fur and animal details.
I enjoy your "bitching about bitching" even though I don't know the post in question. I basically started blogging (and continue to do so) with a very specific audience in mind: a few dear friends of mine that live too far away to see me regularly. that's given me the confidence to put myself out there b/c at the end of the day, online or off, you need to determine whose opinions really matter to you and which can be ignored.

  10. Lots of good points about blogging. We all come down with blogger burnout now and then, but I think people who complain are really just in it for the attention and not because they love the community and the act of blogging. I've been unemployed for the past couple of months, and seriously the only reason I put real clothes on is for the sake of my blog. Growth has been slow, and each new follower feels like a victory, but on a personal level the creative outlet has been the only thing keeping me from going crazy. And while my competitive streak is helpful because I am always challenging myself to try new things and keep my content quality high, I never let myself harbor negative feelings for someone else just because their blog is doing better than mine, or their photo got lots of chic votes.

I've been following you for awhile and I always appreciate your straightforwardness and the fact that you're not afraid to say what's on your mind. This post made me like you all the more. Keep up the good work and the fab outfits. Oh, and don't you dare dye that dress, it's amazing.

  11. Love the outfit (as usual) - and I totally agree on the negative aspects of blogging. I honestly just don't care, if I get a negative comment I delete it and I'm not concerned with numbers. It's not a popularity contest: I like the content I provide, it appeals to me, and I have a small collection of readers who obviously find the content appealing (and a few more looky loos and a few negative nancys) and that's really all I need. I mean, I have a life outside of this (I think we all do) and so what happens here is not the be all and end all of things. And honestly, I have WAY bigger problems than someone who I don't know and will probably never even meet thinking negative things about me.

I totally agree with you on that issue of "bitching" - if somebody cannot take the critique, then they should not blog. Especially when they're using their blog purely as a self-confidence booster :)
On the other hand, I can understand how negative comments may put you off, so when I don't like somebody's post, I don't comment at all rather than be bitching :)
PS: I got the Stylish Blogger Award from Angie for my other blog, and I tagged you, but I'm sure you've got the award like a hundred times, so just in case you feel like checking out and finding about my seven deadly sins :D http://oldrichvintage.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/stylish-blogger-award-me-o/

  15. Seeeriously dude. I love the shit out of this outfit. You know, one of the many reasons I love your blog is because you speak your mind and that's really refreshing. Also, I never feel like my comments are misconstrued because I know you "get it." Which is basically how it is for me in real life. A few people "get it" or "get me" or whatever, and the rest don't but it's all okay. The reason I keep blogging is because there are people out there that GET IT! Do I even make sense? Who cares?

  17. Lady!!! You look gorgeous in that color. It's not sickly one bit. And thank you for writing your opinion on people who write with negative tones on blogs. Sometimes I agree with them, other times I don't. We all have our opinions but we need to not sound so whinny! Some bloggers do it in a comedic way and I find the humor in that. When they bitch bitch bitch, that's when I get annoyed...hehe...

  19. The teal dress looks gorgeous on you, and you are very right...if you cannot take the heat get out of the kitchen. Blogging should be FUN and not taken too seriously, in general you have to worry about your love for what you do, the rest goes last.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I completely agree with you! People read blogs to get inspiration and be entertained. When someone does a negative post like that, it does nothing but make them look bad. You, on the other hand, look ravishing in that teal dress!

  22. I really fucking wish I knew you in person. I feel like we would get along soooo well.

As a new blogger, I looked at people like Melanielikes and was like "wow, she got famous in three posts," and just assumed that if I was stylish enough and commented enough, that would happen to me too. It's like being famous for anything else, though. It's totally random, to a large extent. There are a dozen bloggers I could name who totally deserve to be sponsored based on their sense of style, the design elements of their blogs, and the quality of their writing. There are always going to be more people who deserve to be recognized for something than people who will actually be recognized. And there will always be people who will get recognized but don't deserve it.

Since then, I've realized I just have to get over it. And now I have wayyyy more fun.

FACT: I almost wore that exact same cut/style of dress today, but I changed at the last moment and decided to wear it tomorrow.

I actually like that color on you... I don't know if it would take dye either if it's synthetic?

  24. You are awesome, really enjoyed reading this post. So so true, people expect the world handed to them once they start blogging because "x" blogger has all these sponsors and blah blah.

  25. Hello! Just found your blog and this outfit is AMAZING. I adore the colour of that dress, and you have styled it so beautifully.

As for the negative side of blogging? I also read that article. I just started my blog and thus far everyone I have met has been really warm, and gracious. I adore the fashion blogging community. But I guess I am a little naive to the negative side; it's a shame to hear that it exists.

In any case your blog is lovely; so happy to have found it. xx veronika

  30. I love the dress and I think the colour is lovely, DON'T dye it!!

I read Sofia's post too and whilst I relate to it, I was thinking about posting something like you have, kind of disagreeing with some of the points and trying to uplift the blogging 'mood' that seems to be around at the moment, if I ever get around to it.

I love blogging, I've had a few negative comments, and whilst they did upset me at the time, I just figured, well I must be getting pretty well known if I've got my own haters, ha ha! xxx

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like the dress and the color so I think you should leave it like this :) I hadn't read the article you're referring to, but I took a look and I can definitely understand her point of view. In fact, I don't think she's nagging but just staying "real" about it, because there are just certain downsides for people when it comes to blogging & what better way than to express it on your blog in a fun, creative post? :) Maybe I'm biased because I sort of do this (not nagging all the time, but just taking some "trends" or certain things from the blogosphere and turning them into little articles) but I do agree that you shouldn't of course nag the whole time on your blog or let haters get you down. And most importantly you should keep on blogging because you love doing it! :)

  32. Your hair looks amazing! I meant to comment before but life has gotten away from me. That dress is sick! I love it so much! I wish I could find good and cheap resale shops in my area but it's such a trend so everything is overpriced.

And with the whole blogging thing. I mean of course it does validate you to receive comments/followers/etc but you do need to do it for yourself. Myself personally I have had a blog/livejournal or whatnot for many many years and never worried about who was following. But I have to say since graduating college and my social circle shrinking a bit it is easy to get wrapped up in the silliness of counting followers. And everyone as bad days and insecure days. I have at times introduced feelings of my own on my blog, because it's my outlet, but I've never whined into trying to get more followers. I try to express my insecurities about my real life, not blog life. And I don't do it often but sometimes I do put myself out there. I have some blog friends that do sometimes introduce their struggles, and I commend them for it. But that isn't the same as fishing for complements. I do agree, you are putting your image out there, you have to grow a tough skin. I have had my artwork out in the gallery world for sometime and have learned about criticism. I feel that he people complaining are just ones following this fashion blog trend. Where as people doing it for themselves (I started outfit posts because I needed to force myself to learn to dress for my important job) think of the blogging world differently.

Anyway. Sorry for my rant. And sorry for myself hardly commenting on your blog... since our beginnings on chictopia we don't converse as much. But I do read all your posts, although many times its on my phone and I can't comment. So just wanted you to know that I still am an avid fan <3

  49. Hey :)

Just a quick answer to your question. I think the "cliques" Sofia was referring to are just groups of bloggers who only seem to talk to each other and have their own little "bubbles" if you know what i mean?

I have a few different bloggers on Twitter etc and they seem to clog up my feeds with messages between themselves but hardly respond to any one else. It's just something i've noticed, and i don't want to name any names - it's reflected in real life all the time though so i don't let it affect me, again it's just a petty thing and i have spoken to plently of lovely people through blogging who are willing to take the time to answer my questions and talk to me so i can't really complain personally :)

If not, just ignore or delete the comment. And third : I have receiving comments such as : "love the site. Wanna follow mine? " . Just hate them!
