Messed up kid with no ideals at all

I am so glad I bought these tights. This outfit wouldn’t have worked with normal black tights at all. I do wish I had brown boots though, I hardly have any brown-ish shoes and no brown closed toe shoes at all. Weird right? I’ve always been more of a black person than a brown person, but I’m changing my mind. I’d love some warm orangey brown boots to add to my closet.

I saw my friend shana on the main page, congrats girl!!! She has awesome layering skills and this romantic grungy style, but her camera sucks. She’d be on top here on chictopia in no time if she had a better cam! She’s not ambitious like that though, she just uses chictopia for inspiration and to keep track of her own outfits. I love chictopia for the same reasons, it’s really awesome to read your own entries from a while back. I find that you get an entirely different perspective on your outfits, pictures and writing when you see everything again after some time has passed. A clearer view, you might say. I like that. And inspiration of course, and a warm community. I really love chictopia and would recommend it to anyone. I’m not sucking up or anything, I just think it’s the only community that is big but still feels ‘close’, with the editors replying to your questions etc right away, and with all the girls being nice to each other etc etc. Such a thing is rare in the world, let alone the intarwebz!

I have lots of homework, so I’m going to leave you guys now. I’m feeling grateful today, so I’d just like to thank all my fans, friends and daily commenters, you really rock ass!

  1. I love this outfit, perfect combination of colors, you didn't need brown boots to make this outfit work, the black boots make it way more interesting, in my opinion :)

Love those red tights, they look awesome.

  5. I actually tried to "make it" on Chictopia after almost immediately abandoning Lookbook and Weardrobe. Chictopia certainly does have much more of a warm feel to it, but I also think that it's plagued by similar problems anyway.

Grit and Glamour posted this really interesting pice that pretty much put me off of Chictopia for good. The site seems to really prize attractiveness and thinness over style. You're both attractive/thin AND totally stylish in a non-trend-slaving way, so I think you totally deserve your fame there... but I feel like the Style Gallery doesn't showcase enough women of color and more average-sized women.

I also notice that the Style Gallery tends to become rather homogeneous. I got so sick of seeing modelesque girls in leggings with draped oversized blouses and sky-high heels this summer. Now I'm getting sick to death of various iterations of cute-print-skirt + cute blouse + colorful tights + heels. Both of those are awesome looks, but come on. It gets pretty boring.

I love your style because you change it up so much. You do a lot of experimenting and have a bit of an offbeat way of interpreting trends... and that's definitely a good thing. It isn't hard to make the latest greatest runway knockoffs from H&M and F21 look good, but it's hard to make them look unique. I think you're exceptional because you do really make trends your own.

Anyway, I've only ever been in the Style Gallery once. Even so, my blog traffic only increased for that day, and I think I got like two followers out of it. I know my photos have room for improvement, but I also see a lot of ones in the Style Gallery that are worse. I just don't know. I get really excited about a look only to have it fail miserably, and then I'll post something kind of predictable and un-inventive and it will be really popular, comparatively.

I also have this theory that putting the cross-process and boost filters on your photos on Picnik will immediately make them more successful on style sites because they look "edgier." Which is such bullshit. It's supposed to be about PERSONAL STYLE not magazine editorials.

Chictopia introduced me to many of my favorite fashion blogs of all time--Calivintage, Keiko Lynn, you, Delightfully Tacky, Time Enough for Drums etc.--but I just have lost my patience with it. I've found that being loyal to other people's blogs and actually taking the time to read and respond to their content helps my readership way more than Chictopia ever did.

    What do you think?

  9. Sophi: I feel what you're saying, but I have some slight remarks. For one, I really feel that Chictopia is different from the other sites mentioned by you and the article you linked. Chictopia thrives on people commenting on other people, and this way it motivates people to be nice to each other. Fake or real friendliness is the oil that makes chictopia run smoothly, so that is one reason why chictopia deserves some praise. It is inherently positive. In my experience, there are two ways to "make it" on chictopia: either you have the very best pictures (pictures are more important than style, sadly, and yes, the style that "scores" can get quite boring from time to time, and yes, bloggers tend to feel like carbon copies of one another after a while, but it's the trick to find the ones that have a very distinct aesthetic or sense of humor or both), or you are a very social person who doesn't mind spending some time commenting on lots of people, resulting in people commenting you back and generating traffic which will make you a prominent chictopian in some time.

Secondly, about the beauty standards: I study communication sciences, and this has made me realize the way statistics work and don't work. There is more to statistics than the pure numbers. YES, there are disproportionately small numbers of curvier or non-white girls on stylesites, including chictopia. Yes, this probably has something to do with beauty standards and curvy or black girls not resonating as well with the viewing public. HOWEVER, one mustn't forget that this is somewhat of a vicious cycle: the fact that curvy or black girls aren't being featured as style icons all too often is both a cause and a result. Curvy or black girls don't feel like fashion or style is the place for them to be, and they might not start style blogs as often as slim white girls who have loads of role models to choose from, inspiring them to start a style blog. You can't blame chictopia etc for these standards. You might want them to take part in some sort of affirmative action, but how do you suppose they'd do that? It wouldn't be fair on all the other girls, would it?

In fact, curvy or black girls who boycot stylesites like chictopia, basically make the underrepresentation of those "minorities" last. If all these atypical girls would just go on chictopia etc and pimp the hell out of their styles, telling girlfriends and just contributing to the community, patiently building their peergroup and fanbase, they might just influence and inspire other girls of their own "groups" to do the same. I feel like representation in the media is pretty much the only way stereotypes can be changed, and since radio and tv etc are hard media to control, the internet is basically a gift from god for girls to control and take matters in their own hands to abolish cliché standards of beauty. The more diverse the representation, the more diverse the beauty standards. Beauty standards aren't inert, they evolve, so we should put our shoulders underneath that change imo.

  10. Lastly: the best piece of advice I can give you for the use of chictopia etc is to NOT start doing it for attention or traffic or praise. We are not in highschool anymore indeed, and it is easy to be sucked back into that mindset, but it doesn't satisfy you in the end, even if you do have succes. You should only blog if you love blogging, writing, taking pictures etc. I don't get a lot of comments on my personal blog, but I LOVE my personal blog. Not getting any comments would probably sting quite a bit, but just a few people taking the time to exchange thoughts with me is enough for me. I just love the diary-like quality of blogging, and being able to read my own shiz after some time has passed. Keeping track of myself. A bit narcissistic, but I love it.

If you really want to be popular on chictopia, I advise you to comment on lots of people and find the moment of day that there is a lot of traffic. For example, saturdays are always slow. If you post your "really good" outfit on a saturday, it might get loads less traffic than a "boring" outfit posted on a wednesday or something. I do hate thinking of blogging in terms of "trying to score a hit" though :(

  11. PS: chictopia is the least about beautiful photos and the most about personal style of all the sites mentioned, so they get my thumbs up for that reason. But yes, chictopia has been drifting towards the "DIY editorial" thing too, and I strongly disapprove and feel like chictopia will probably lose lots of their users if they push it too far. Let's just keep our fingers crossed and hope they still reserve a place for non-perfect pictures.

  14. I love this outfit and am totally going to copy you!!!!

and about your conversation here between you and Sophi, i think you gave an awesome response! i read your blog daily even though i don't comment every day. You have such a unique style and i think it's great. I am a bit narcissistic too and i enjoy my personal blog and am proud of it and hope to have more readers... all in good time of course! It's nice to be part of chictopia as kind of an outfit log and inspiration lookbook as well. I think being part of blogging and chictopia is just about sharing and being positive... eventually i think it will all pan out well.
